SOMERS, N.Y. - At its April 14, dinner meeting at Somerfields, the Northeast Westchester (NEW) Rotary Club honored its first Somers Intermediate School Super Stars. The club honored two fifth graders, nominated by the school for academic achievement and exemplifying the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self," and 2016 theme, "Be a Gift to the World." In the presence of their families, Principal Stacey Elconin and Assistant Principal Elizabeth Barette, Nicholas Mauantonio and Sara Vala received certificates and Barnes and Noble gift cards from NEW Rotary President-Elect Kathi Casella.

Nicholas and Sara were selected as excellent representatives of SIS for their service as elected student government leaders which required planning, speeches and campaigning among their peers, and then continuing on to be voted president and vice president, respectively.

They have since organized student government meetings, school-wide fund raisers for charities, and are continually searching for ways to improve the school. They wrote a school pledge and began an anti-bullying club that makes announcements via the public address system on ways to be a good friend. The students, in turn, spoke of the satisfaction and rewards that come from service and the support they feel from their school community and family. The club will present the next SIS Super Star Awards following the conclusion of the school's

This was a fun meeting for us on April 14, 2016.   No business at all!


The first of our fifth grade students, from Somers Intermediate School  were honored.  Sara Vala and Nicholas Maurantonio were accompanied by their parents.   Stacey Elconin, Principal of SIS and Elizabeth Barette, Assistant Principal of SIS, also joined us.
